A.R. Rahman is an extremely successful composer in the world of film and television.  He has been nominated for an Academy Award five times and has been awarded the Oscar on two of those occasions.  Rahman was born in India where he started his musical career at a young age.  He had classical training, and later earned a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music.  Soon after, he was offered a job to score the film "Roja" (1991), and since then his career has never looked back.  With his unique compositional style, some say Rahman has redefined contemporary Indian music.  I believe by doing so, he has made South Asian music and culture much more accessible and visible, especially with works on such films as "Slumdog Millionaire" and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, “Bombay Dreams.”
