Asian/Asian American Composers in Film
There is a lot between the notes, and even more behind the scenes.
Shigeru Umebayashi (UME) was born in Kita-Kyushu, Japan. During the 1980’s, he launched his music career amidst the Japanese New Wave movement at the time. His film composing career launched in 1984 when he was asked to compose a song for Japanese actor, Yusaku Matsuda, in Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain.” From here, he moved onto many other film scoring endeavors, such as the ever successful “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of The Golden Flower.”
